OUR FARM STORY
HISTORY
S&P Farm, named for the Sockwell and Paisley families that have lived on and worked the farm for five generations, is a 70-acre working farm located in McLeansville, NC between Greensboro and Burlington near Interstates 85 and 40. Originally part of the original Gannon land grant issued in the 1700s, S&P farm has specialized in row crops and beef cattle for longer than a century. The farm left the Gannon family in the early 1900’s when it was given to John Hubbard. In the 1930’s, Mr. Hubbard traded farms with his nephew, Fred R. Paisley. Fred was a printer by trade but farmed as much as he could on the side. His gardens provided multiple families with sweet corn, potatoes and other vegetables. However, he was most famous for growing the sweetest watermelons in the area. Fred and Florence Paisley’s daughter Helen, who grew up on the farm, married Boyd Sockwell. Boyd and Helen lived on the farm briefly after getting married while they constructed a house of their own across the street. Soon after moving into their new house, Boyd and Helen had a daughter, Laura Jo, and thirteen months later were blessed with their son Lance.
MEET THE SOCKWELL
The Paisley at S&P Farm is owned and operated by husband-and-wife team, Lance and Shervawn Sockwell. These two high school sweethearts attended Western Carolina University together where they obtained degrees in education as well as earning varsity letters in cheerleading and football. After graduation, Lance and Shervawn moved onto the family farm, began their teaching careers and soon started a family. The farm was an amazing place to raise their three children Sierra, Lakota and Easton who quickly fell in love with farm life and encouraged the family to add cows, goats, sheep, chickens, pigs and even alpacas to the farm. After serving their local community as teachers, coaches and principals for almost the last 30 years, they are now ready to open up their little slice of heaven with the rest of the world.
